UK Rubik’s Championships finds new King of the Cube

Published on: November 7th, 2012

This weekend saw top speedcubers from across the globe go cube-to-cube to become champion.

Sunday November 4 saw a new King of the Cube crowned at Leicester University. 15-year-old Alexander Lau beat the competition to become the new UK Champion with an average time of 9.24 seconds.  As well as facing almost 100 human competitors from nine countries, Lau also had to beat the world’s fastest 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube solver, the Cubestormer II robot.

The robot, created by Mike Dobson and David Gilday, although not officially entered to compete, completed the Cube in around five seconds alongside the MultiCuber and MindCuber robots, who were also at the event showcasing their Rubik’s Cube-solving skills.

Student Simon Crawford from Nottingham won the Rubik’s Cube 3x3x3 One Handed competition.

The event had widespread support from the media, with coverage appearing on ITV, local press and online.
