Britain’s youngest ever Top Trumps champion crowned

Published on: 11th July 2017

Eight year old Zack Barnett lifted the Top Trumps title over the weekend.

This year, Top Trumps makers teamed up with conservationists from Chester Zoo, the UK’s most visited zoo and home to over 15,000 animals and 500 different species, and the National Top Trumps Schools event attracted entrants from all across the UK.

No winner has ever been as young as Zack, who at eight has become the 8th champion to be crowned.

The youngster lifted the trophy this weekend at Chester Zoo – where the Grand Finals were staged – after beating thousands of children, the majority older than himself, in heats en route to the finals. At the Grand Finals he was the youngest of the 12 competitors.

Zach, who is from Bath, commented: “I can’t believe I have won.” His dad James added: “He is a very quick learner and brilliant at games involving strategy . It’s refreshing that so many youngsters have engaged in Top Trumps rather than be slaves to their smart phones. He has made friends playing and interacted face to face rather than behind a screen.”

Zack was presented with a trophy and, in recognition of this year’s Top Trumps Schools Tournament theme of Amazing Animals, a plaque will be unveiled in Zack’s name at the meerkat enclosure at Chester Zoo for the next twelve months.
