Global box office round up

Reports show that Moana has topped $400m worldwide, with Fantastic Beasts surpassing $775m.

moana480Many films opened over Christmas and New Year’s Day with it being a prime time for families visiting the cinema.

Walt Disney’s Moana is estimated to have made $14.3m over the New Year’s Friday-Monday period, putting it up 14%. In total, it looks likely to end up as the fourth biggest non-Pixar Disney movie behind Zootopia, The Lion King and Frozen. It is expected to top Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Big Hero 6 within a week or two. As of Sunday, total box office sales crossed $400m, despite a slow start overseas.

As of the end of the holiday period, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has made just over $776.8m worldwide, and is expected to cross the $800m mark.

DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls took $150m over the weekend, with Doctor Strange gaining $230m. Universal’s newest movie Sing also made $56m over the weekend.
