Sales at Argos for the 12 months to the beginning of March 2013 totalled £3.9b, up slightly on a year earlier.

However, the group’s other major business, Homebase, has continued to struggle. As a result Home Retail’s underlying pre-tax profits fell for the fifth year in a row, falling to £91.1m from £101.6m a year ago.

Chief executive Terry Duddy said that the results were “a good outcome” in what has been “a challenging year”.
