Hornby unveils Playtrains range

Published on: 8th February 2021

The new Playtrains range includes trains with names, faces and personalities and is ideal for the young enthusiast.

Arriving in summer this year, Hornby says the collection will let children start to build their first model railway world, that they can then go on to develop, build and interact with.

The Playtrains remote controlled battery train set and accessories is a completely new range that Hornby has developed for younger model locomotive fans. The engines feature working lights, multiple sounds, three speeds in both forward and reverse and an easy to clip together track system, plus lots more.

Additional items are available to expand the set, including individual locomotives, rolling stock and track packs, providing endless opportunities to expand and build a Playtrains world.

The trains in the range have been given individual character names, faces and personalities. Flash, Bolt and Thunder are the key characters, and children can learn all about them and their adventures via the Playtrains Portal. The portal hosts a wealth of fun and engaging information, including a  kids zone, character stories and personality profiles, educational learnings, videos and more.

Montana Hoeren, head of brand at Hornby, commented: “After two years of working on this really fun and exciting project, I am so pleased that it is finally out in the open for all train loving kids to enjoy. Playtrains is a brand new range of characterised toy trains which will be hitting the worldwide toy market this summer. With lights, sound, various speeds and handheld control, the range is ideal for children who are looking to enter the wonderful world of railways in miniature.”

In a recent trading statement, Hornby reported that Group sales for the third quarter had increased compared to the same period a year ago. Speaking of the latest results, chief executive officer, Lyndon Davies commented: “The transformation at Hornby continues to accelerate, this is not time for braking,” and the company promised new ranges such as Playtrains would be forthcoming, that will contribute to the company’s optimistic outlook for the year ahead.
