Morrisons has appointed former Tesco Northern Ireland boss Gary Mills as its new group retail director, the move will be effective from 1st August.
Gary Mills will join Morrisons with over 30 years’ retail experience, having begun his career at Stewarts Supermarket in Northern Ireland, a chain that was acquired by Tesco in 1997. Since then he has held a variety of senior positions at Tesco, both in the UK and Ireland. He took up the role of Tesco’s retail director for convenience in June 2014 before becoming retail director for the North and Northern Ireland in February. It is understood that he left the business in May as part of the wide ranging restructuring at Tesco.
Gary will replace Martyn Fletcher who was one of five directors who left the business following David Potts arrival at the company. The position has been covered on an interim basis by retail HR director Claire Grainger.
The appointment is an important step towards rebuilding the Morrisons senior team and follows the recruitment of Darren Blackhurst as commercial director. These appointments come as Morrisons prepares to announce its interim results on 10th September, which will be the the first results presentation since David Potts joined Morrisons.
