New consultancy to licence lyrics for consumer products

Consumer brands across a range of product sectors will have access to some of the world’s most iconic song lyrics following the launch of Sunny Side Up.

Sunny Side Up ( is being launched by licensing industry veteran Michael Gottlieb who started his licensing career at Warner Bros Consumer Products in the late 1980s.

Gottlieb said: “I am excited to begin this new chapter in my career with my own consultancy. It will build on my many years of experience and relationships in the music licensing and retail industries. Sunny Side Up will work closely with retailers and consumer goods companies to devise new products that can harness the powerful emotional pull of consumers’ familiarity with popular song lyrics.”

Sunny Side Up’s initial clients include the Music Sales Group and Imagem Music, two of the world’s largest music publishers.

Gottlieb added: “These leading music publishers have back catalogues that contain a treasure trove of iconic lyrics just waiting to be mined. Lyrics can be featured on products to convey humour, express an uplifting sentiment, evoke nostalgia, or just add something special to an everyday item.”

Prior to launching Sunny Side Up, Gottlieb established and ran the licensing division at pre-school comic publisher Redan Publishing. At Redan, he represented the global licensing rights for the world’s longest running children’s TV series: The Sooty Show. Gottlieb has also held senior licensing posts at DCD Media plc and Corporate Creative Licensing (CCL).

He first created the concept of merchandising well-known song lyrics in 2005 when he was head of licensing at CCL. He licensed lyrics from several John Lennon and Paul McCartney songs to Mothercare, resulting in an award-winning range of lyrical babywear.

Gottlieb subsequently set up deals for other successful lyrical products, including mugs featuring Lennon and McCartney songs, an Abbey Road Board Game, a Puppy Love plush toy featuring Donny Osmond’s voice, and a range of lyrical greeting cards for Marks & Spencer.

Chris Wright, one of the music industry’s leading figures and non-executive chairman of music company BMG/Chrysalis, first worked with Michael Gottlieb in 2009 when he licensed the rights to the song ‘Puppy Love’ for use on a plush puppy.

Wright said: “Michael has both vision and creativity and is able to integrate them to create spectacular music products. He is great at bringing people together on all his projects and has built some incredibly interesting relationships over the years.”
