The retailer ended the year on a high after surging Christmas sales.

B&M has reported a “pleasing finish” to the year with December sales up 4.5% to £874.5m.

Chief executive Simon Arora commented: “Despite the broader economic uncertainty over the last quarter, B&M is on track to deliver a record year for both sales and earnings, representing our fourteenth consecutive year of profit growth.”

With 13 new B&M store openings in the final quarter, December’s momentum continued into January, with 20 further new stores opening in Q1. B&M plans to open 56 gross new stores over the year.
