The owners of Retford Toymaster on Market Square announced its closure in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
As reported by Lincolnshire Live, Retford Toymaster has closed after more than seven years in the town.
In a post on its Facebook page, the owners said: “Sadly after over seven years of trading in Retford we have made the tough decision to close the toy shop. Today was our last day. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have shopped with us, especially the children who enjoyed spending their pocket money and those who will have grown up with their local toy shop. We have closed due to extremely difficult trading conditions in Retford. We have attempted repeatedly to relocate further towards the centre of town, but a suitable unit could not be found.”
Councillor Jim Anderson said the closure was partially due to the cost of rents and the rise of online shopping.
“It is very disappointing to hear about the closure of Toymaster, it is a backwards step for the town,” he commented. “There is a growing number of private landlords buying property in the town and setting the price of renting at extortionate rates – which is simply not sustainable for businesses. Another issue is the rise of websites such as Amazon, who simply take the business out of Retford. It’s a shame.”
Many residents in the town have taken to comment on the toy shop’s Facebook post to express their disappointment at the news.
David Lawson commented: “Really sorry to read this, my daughter always enjoyed coming in. I’ve had a shop in the town for 19 years and the footfall since Christmas in the town has been shocking. Sad to see yet another shop go and another empty unit in the town.”
