MTS outlines changes to Heavy Metal limits in toys

Published on: 4th January 2019

The EU has issued proposals for a reduction in the allowed limit of Aluminium in toys.

“Aluminium was only added to the toy safety requirements a few years ago and the current limits are quite high but the proposal is to reduce them by over 50%,” writes Mat Thorpe of Modern Testing Services. “If these proposals go ahead as planned then they should to come info force around the end of 2020. As this will be an EU requirement, the outcome of Brexit over the coming weeks will determine if this will apply to the UK or not. However, anyone selling into the EU will certainly need to take note and take action as needed.”

Matt continues: “On the subject of limit reductions, remember that the reduced limit for Lead comes into force in the next few weeks and Chromium VI at the end of the year. As it’s early January the Brexit pantomime is still going strong, but these changes will not be affected by whatever happens on the Brexit front. There will, though, be some toy safety implications depending upon the final outcome.”
