Warner Bros teams up with Funko for movie

Published on: 17th September 2019

Warner will develop and produce a film based on Funko’s collectible figures.

Extending the existing long-term partnership that has seen the two companies collaborate on licensed collectibles from franchises such as Batman and Harry Potter, Warner Bros has optioned the rights to Funko figures.

According to Deadline, Allison Abbate, executive VP of Warner Animation Group, will manage the partnership on behalf of the studio. Allison commented that the studio is excited to bring the characters to life on screen. “Funko’s fresh take on pop culture make these figurines incredibly appealing to fans of all ages,” she said.

Oscar-nominated director and designer Teddy Newton will develop the storyline for the movie, along with Disney Animation veteran director Mark Dindal, on behalf of Warner Animation Group.

Funko CEO Brian Mariotti commented: “We’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group has a unique vision of what the first film should be, and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them.“
