plaY-room celebrates 10 years in business

plaY-room will be celebrating its 10 year birthday in 2018, following its official launch in June 2008.

Having started with just 14 department store members, the current membership stands at 83 with 217 outlets between them. This total includes department stores, garden centres, sports shops, tourist outlets and even a chain of pharmacists. All three nominations for Department Store Toy Retailer of the Year were members of the plaY-room group: Toytown (Arnotts), Jarrold of Norwich and R C Austin, Newton Abbot.

plaY-room’s Miles Penhallow commented: “We believe that we are already working with the best suppliers in the toy trade, but continue to give consideration to new supplier partnerships. Every year since our formation we have offered two import programmes to our membership each containing 400-450 higher margin lines and branded specials through our import partner SMF.”

“It has been our goal over the last 10 years to improve our members’ profitability. This we have achieved through beneficial terms, promotional activity and regular communication sharing best practice with our members via our weekly newsletters, quarterly bulletins, range planners and more recently, social media. We have also been looking at opportunities in the children’s gift trade.”

“plaY-room has also been co-ordinating in-store activity programmes for school holidays and working with key suppliers to enhance point of sale available to our member stores. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our retail members and suppliers who have helped us on this remarkable journey. Here’s to the next 10 years.”
