Penguin Random House UK is looking for a Hardlines Category Manager to cover a maternity leave position in its busy Penguin Ventures team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying new licensing opportunities for key hardlines categories, including (but not limited to) toys and games, puzzles, publishing, food and audio for all the company’s properties within the UK. These include iconic children’s brands such as Peter Rabbit, The Snowman, Flower Fairies and Spot, among others.
In line with the strategic brand plan, the successful candidate will identify potential licensees and partners and present Penguin’s properties with a view to closing and contracting deals, and will work with partners to develop their product ranges while providing ongoing brand support in conjunction with Penguin’s brand, creative and PR teams.
While the sales category focus will be the UK market, the successful candidate will also be expected to think globally, identifying opportunities for multi-territory deals and liaising with Penguin’s network of international agents to secure support in their markets. In addition, they will be responsible for managing and growing the company’s network of agents across the Americas and Australia/New Zealand, providing support and updates and identifying new agency partners to represent Penguin’s brands. The candidate will also be expected to attend relevant trade shows as appropriate to their categories, as well as licensing industry events representing Penguin Ventures.
Skills and attributes
To be successful in this position, the candidate will need to be highly commercial and target driven, as well as entrepreneurial and flexible in their thinking. They’ll have excellent presentation skills and have a good eye for detail in respect to contracts and deal making. Knowledge of the UK licensing industry is required, as well as knowledge of UK retail trends, plus experience of dealing with and managing agents in the American and Australasian markets.
