SMF Toytown unveils strong set of 2021 results

Published on: 20th September 2022

The specialist toy chain SMF Toytown operates over 30 stores across the country, with two new branches about to be added to the store estate in the coming weeks.

SMF Toytown has released its annual results for 2021, in which sales increased by 39.2% to reach £14.96m. In addition, the balance sheet value of the company was up 33.4% at £4.76m, as the increase in sales was accompanied by significant profit growth.

Talking to Toy World, owner Alan Simpson was delighted with the results: “It was a pretty impressive year overall,” he commented. “In fact, these were pretty unreal results given the trading conditions last year, which reflects the sterling job performed by the team at SMF.”

Alan also confirmed that last year’s strong performance has continued so far this year, with sales up 65% so far in 2022. He also confirmed that the retailer will be adding to its existing 30+ store estate.“We plan to open two further stores this year. I am currently working in Perth, preparing for the store to open later this week. That will be followed by Coventry, where we will be opening a new branch in the West Orchards Shopping Centre in mid-October – it will be based on the first floor of the former Debenhams store on Smithford Way. However, we are under no illusions; we anticipate that trading will be challenging given current circumstances.”

Having first launched in 1979, the Toytown chain has grown and flourished over the last 40 plus years of trading. Even in challenging times, the team described the chain as “not only surviving, but thriving”, thanks to the strong family team behind the business operations, a series of shrewd commercial decisions and a company ethos which means the team always endeavours to stay one step ahead.
