Spielwarenmesse adds new Sustainability category to ToyAward event

Published on: 30th September 2021

Online entries for the ToyAward event launch on 1st October and the winners will be announced during Spielwarenmesse PressPreview in January.

As sustainability and climate protection increasingly edge into focus in the toy industry, and demand for toys made from ecological materials or that encourage environmentally friendly behaviour is on the rise, Spielwarenmesse eG will reflect the topic of sustainability in its ToyAward event. The team is introducing a new Sustainability category in time for the 72nd edition of the Nuremberg Toy Fair, taking place from 2nd – 6th February, 2022.

Entries open on 1st October, and run until 6th December. All submissions will then be considered by a jury of international experts, which is welcoming new members this year. The internationally renowned accolades will be presented to the winners at the show’s PressPreview for the first time.

In the Sustainability category, Spielwarenmesse exhibitors can submit innovations that encourage environmentally friendly behaviour in children. The category is also open to products that are made from ecological materials, have a sustainable supply chain or have been upcycled or recycled.

The Startup category along with the four age-specific categories Baby & Infant (0-3 years), Pre-school (3-6 years), SchoolKids (6-10 years) and Teenager & Adults (from 10 years) remain unchanged. Exhibitors can enter up to three innovations for the ToyAward on the website and have until 6th December to do so. Three products in each of the six categories will be selected to be nominated for the accolade by the expert jury.

This year, the panel has become more international as newly recruited members Sue Warfield, president of US association ASTRA; Jean Youn, head of Toy Business at Korean company Kakaokids and Dr. Harald Käb, owner of narocon InnovationConsulting from Germany, all contribute their expertise.

The innovations nominated for the ToyAward will be unveiled at the fair’s main press conference on 27th January 2022. The winners will be announced in the new setting of the PressPreview for the first time. The awards ceremony will represent the climax of the innovation show which will be staged for international media representatives at Nuremberg’s Exhibition Center, NCC Ost, on 1st February 2022.

Further information on entering the competition can be found on the ToyAward website.
