Tesco has reported a slower rate of decline in sales at its UK stores as it continues to compete against discount stores Lidl and Aldi.
The supermarket’s UK sales fell 1.3% for the three months to the end of May. UK sales dropped by 4% in the same period a year ago.
The UK result beat forecasts of a fall of 1.6%-3% and is also an improvement on the 1.7% fall reported in the fourth quarter of the last financial year.
Tesco’s shares rose 3.3% in early trading and group sales dropped 1.3% internationally in the quarter compared with a 3.4% dip a year ago.
