After hours of fighting off tough competition from over 155 Perudo players, the coveted title of 2019 Perudo World Champion went to Orson Fry, who was presented with the winner’s traditional Silver Perudo Cup and Dice trophy by his girlfriend, fashion designer and TV presenter Alexa Chung.

The 30th Anniversary of the Perudo World Championships, a high- profile annual event organised by University Games and Paul Lamond Games, took place at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in central London.

The event saw players compete across three rounds; this year, because of tying scores, the 44 highest ranked players progressed to the semi-final stage. The winner of each of the seven semi final tables then moved on to the Final Table.

All seven finalists used shrewd strategies in a bid to outwit their fellow players, but it was Orson, watched by a crowd that included his father Cosmo Fry, along with friends and family, who held his nerve and skillfully bluffed his way to the coveted title. Throughout the final, the crowds were gripped on what was described by one player as the ‘best game of Perudo they have ever seen’.

The 30th playing of the Perudo World Championship was the biggest and best Championship yet, according to Mark Jones, head of sales for the host companies. “The Perudo World Championships has become the event in the board games calendar,” he enthused. “It was yet another outstanding evening packed with fun, tension, excitement and highly-skilled Perudo players. The atmosphere was fantastic and passion for the game was palpable. We were delighted that 2019’s event saw a greater than ever demand, with younger generations flocking to play and over 250 people trying to secure a place.”

The liar dice game has proved popular with celebrities across the globe. Stars including Stephen Fry, Siena Millar and Sir Richard Branson all have a passion for the game. Pixie Barnett, Sir Bob Geldof’s daughter, also played in this year’s event.
