Three strong trends for Spielwarenmesse

Published on: 1st February 2023

This year’s Spielwarenmesse, taking place from 1st to 5th February, will have the themes of Discover!, Brands for Fans and MetaToys.

Spielwarenmesse‘s international TrendCommittee has identified three trends for this year’s show – Discover!, Brands for Fans and MetaToys Trade, with relevant products available to explore and try in the redesigned ToyTrends experience in Hall 3A at the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre from today.

The three trends will help to guide retailers as they select a range of goods with high sales potential. With Discover!, everything ultimately revolves around the opening up of new worlds and themes with other countries, cultures and languages, the wonder of nature or unknown galaxies, along with whys and wherefores. The products in this trend engender a curiosity for the unknown and encourage children to research new worlds intently so they can understand them.

With comic figures and well-known characters from film and TV enjoying as much popularity now as ever before, Brands for Fans is based on licences and retro products.

Innovative approaches and technologies for play are the focus of the MetaToys trend. The digital world is presenting opportunities which are being picked up by the sector with products that are played out in Web3 or make use of technologies such as augmented reality. The trend also includes products that offer an understanding of the emerging metaverse and associated concepts.

In the experiential environment of the ToyTrends area, each trend has its own section and, in the nearby Toy Business Forum, experts will give daily presentations which, alongside current industry topics and future challenges for the trade, also cover the ToyTrends.

From Wednesday to Saturday, following on from the Toy Business presentations, Reyne Rice and metaverse expert Dominik GrieseKentschke will take it in turns to present the 2023 ToyTrends. The presentations are available in German and English and are streamed on the business platform Spielwarenmesse Digital.

Full information on the trends can be found at the website www.spielwarenmesse.de/en/trends. Product examples can also be found on the business platform Spielwarenmesse Digital.

In December, members of the TrendCommittee: Toy World’s John Baulch from Great Britain, Clara Blasco from Spain and Axel Dammler from Germany, took part in a podcast to explain how the committee scouts out these trends.
