Toys R Us to open in India

Lulu Group’s retail initiative Tablez will bring Toys R Us to India in September.

The first destination will be the Phoenix Mall in Whitefield, Bengaluru, where it will compete with the UK-based Hamleys.

Tablez will simultaneously bring Babies R Us, the specialty baby products retailer of the Toys R Us group, to the city.

Speaking to the Times of India, Adeeb Ahamed, managing director of Tablez, Lulu Financial Group, and Twenty14 Holdings, said Tablez is planning a big expansion in India. It currently has nine stores, of which six are in Bengaluru, and three in Cochin.

Adeeb said the plan is to invest Rs 300 crore over the next five years to expand the retail footprint by offering a wide range of products for consumers. Bringing Toys R Us to India is a core part of this plan.

Adeeb commented: “Our vision is to make Tablez an everyday company. Usually, my contact time with customers is once a month. But you need to capture their attention on a daily basis. The plan is to introduce a variety of brands in different categories, so that a customer has access to practically everything within the Tablez portfolio.”

The international brands Tablez has brought to India include the American ice cream parlor chain Cold Stone Creamery, the South Africa-based flame-grilled chicken concept Galito’s, and Tablez’ own brand Bloomsbury’s, a boutique cafe and bakery. On Monday, it also launched Spanish fashion brands Springfield and Women’secret.
