Trailers released for new Transformers, Guardians of the Galaxy and India Jones movies

Published on: 5th December 2022

A trio of trailers was released last week for some of 2023’s biggest blockbusters – Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

Indiana JonesFilm fans have reacted with glee and excitement to a triple drop of blockbuster trailers that landed last week.

Slated to arrive in cinemas in June 2023, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the seventh movie in the Transformers franchise. Set in 1994, the film introduces a new breed of robots, Maximals, who favour animal shapes as their alternative form. Optimus Primal (Ron Perlman), Airazor, Cheetor and Rhinox unite with the Autobots – lead by everyone’s favourite HGV hero, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) – to save planet earth from the ravages of the Predacons and Terrorcons. Action is guaranteed.

Movie fans have noted the film’s strongly toyetic appearance, while the raft of new characters will surely provide licensees with plenty of new ways in which to leverage the franchise. Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) directs Rise of the Beasts, which also stars the voice talents of Michelle Yeoh, David Sobolov, Peter Dinklage, Pete Davidson, Cristo Fernández, Liza Koshy and John DiMaggio. Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback star at the robots’ human allies.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will arrive in cinemas on 5th May 2023. The film picks up after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, though lead characters Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Groot (Dwayne Johnson) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) appeared briefly at the beginning of Thor: Love and Thunder and the recently released Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special, which is currently available to watch on Disney+.

Director James Gunn has stated that the third instalment in the franchise will wrap up the story of the intrepid, rag-tag band of galactical adventurers in what promises to be an emotional affair: viewers will be able to catch a glimpse of baby Rocket in the trailer, with a voiceover hinting that the film will take a closer look at the character’s background, while Zoe Saldana’s timeline-2 Gamora also returns to the fray after disappearing at the end of Infinity War.

Also arriving on the big screen in June is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Judging by the trailer, the fifth movie in the Indiana Jones franchise, set in 1969, looks like a return to form for the daring archaeologist/university professor after 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull saw him grappling with the idea of psychic aliens – a plot that was widely panned by critics.

Happily, Dial of Destiny doesn’t look like it’ll be asking audiences to set aside their credulity any more than they would have done for the first three movies, though Henry Jones Jr. (Harrison Ford) – now thoroughly getting on in years – is shown once more making his way through ancient ruins, unearthing treasures and galloping a horse towards an oncoming subway train.

The trailer reveals some neat nods back to the 80s classics. John-Rhys Davies reprises his role as beloved character Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir – the ‘best digger in Egypt’ – who first appeared in Raider of the Lost Ark in 1981. He also appeared in The Last Crusade in 1989. Fans will also see the tables turned on the ageing protagonist at the end of the trailer. Reminiscent of ‘that’ marketplace scene in Raiders, a scene in Dial of Destiny shows Indiana’s fancy whip-cracking skills rendered useless against heavily armed enemies.

Starring alongside Harrison Ford is Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who plays Henry Jones Jr’s goddaughter, Helena, and Mads Mikkelsen (Fantastic Beasts, Rogue One) as the villainous Voller. The film is directed by James Mangold, the man behind the highly acclaimed Logan and Walk the Line.
