Treasures of Wetherby goes up for sale

The sale presents a rare opportunity to take on an existing, successful retail business with a loyal customer base and supportive suppliers.

Zhara Armstrong has announced that her popular toy shop Treasures of Wetherby in West Yorkshire has gone up for sale.

Treasures of Wetherby has been part of the Wetherby community for almost 12 years, Zhara told Toy World, having opened when her children were young. She said: “We started our adventure when my youngest was just starting school. Both my children helped me create the magic a toy shop can bring to a child, parent, or grandparents.

Treasures has been a lot of fun and really surprising at times. I have always loved seeing beaming smiles on children’s faces on a Saturday morning as they chose what to spend their pocket money on or came in to tell me about their head teachers award. Our Treasures express train has delighted customers from our opening day and is still going today. My wonderful team have been with me since the early days, Sabrina since opening day and Karen joined soon after; both have brought their own magic to Treasures and are keen to see this continue. Our last two Saturday assistants have grown up with Treasures as their favourite toy shop and now it is their first taste of paid work.”

Zhara says that as her children move on to college and university, she’s decided the time is right for her next challenge – and that means Treasures needs a new owner. Despite the issues presented by Covid, the business has performed well, even increasing its footfall and launching a new website. Sales turnover has grown and the shop’s loyal customer base has helped Zhara and her team increase the awareness of Treasures in the local area. The successful Treasures customer loyalty scheme is still growing too, with 3,000 customer email addresses and 7,000 customers signed up.

“With a very supportive supplier base, and having been a Toymaster member since opening, Treasures has been repeatedly recognised for its willingness to run in-store toy demonstrations and play days, and for delivering creative window and wall displays,” Zhara adds. “Treasures is well recognised for its support of local schools, clubs and charity events and over the years this has helped to establish it as a much-loved shop in Wetherby. Customers repeatedly tell us we are their ‘absolute favourite’, ‘a life saver with our beautiful gift wrapping’, and more than once we’ve been referred to as the Hamleys of the North.”

“I would love to see Treasures continue to thrive and feel this is a wonderful opportunity for a new person to build on what the current Treasures team has created.”
