Walmart rumoured to name China chief as Asda’s new boss

According to Sky News, Sean Clarke is being lined up to replace Andy Clarke as the retailer’s next chief executive.

Asda-480Sean, who currently runs Walmart’s operations in China, worked at Asda as its commercial finance director, before taking roles in Canada, Germany and Japan. He then moved to China, where he initially worked as Walmart’s chief operating, before being promoted to the role of president and chief executive.

The move would surprise Britain’s retail industry, which has been expecting that Roger Burnley, who resigned from Sainsbury’s last year, will become Asda’s chief operating officer. This succession plan appeared to be confirmed last week when Andy said in an interview that Roger was “a great leader” and would be “a great colleague”.

The timing of the change is unclear, although sources indicated on Sunday that Walmart could make an announcement as soon as this week.
