Toy Association urges companies to join fight against tariffs

Published on: 4th October 2018

Tariffs on $200b in Chinese goods now in effect, with an additional $267b in tariffs threatened by Trump.

Tariffs of 10% on $200b worth of Chinese imports went into effect on the 24th September. On the same day, China imposed retaliatory tariffs on $60b of US goods, which will negatively impact made-in-America exports, including US toys.

The Trump administration previously threatened that it would immediately pursue tariffs on approximately $267b of additional imports should China retaliate. Toys are likely to be on the potential list of additional tariffs.

The $200b list of Chinese imports does not include finished toys, though it includes children’s furniture, such as chairs, arts & crafts items, juvenile products, children’s hats, and more. On 1st January, tariffs on these goods will increase from 10% to 25%.

The Toy Association continues to strongly oppose tariffs, advocating to the US Trade Representative (USTR) and on Capitol Hill to ensure officials understand the profoundly negative impact of tariffs on American companies and jobs. The Toy Association is also part of Americans for Free Trade, a multi-industry coalition that opposes tariffs and highlights the benefits of international trade to the US economy.

Toy Association staff have spoken on behalf of the industry to news media, and have been working to connect toy companies with reporters so that they can share stories about the harmful impact of tariffs on their businesses.

The Toy Association is also calling on companies to join advocacy efforts by:
• Sending a grassroots letter to federal representatives. The letter can be edited to share personal anecdotes. It’s crucial for members of Congress to hear from constituents and understand the local impact of tariffs on their districts and states.
Joining the Americans for Free Trade Coalition to help strengthen coalition efforts.
Sharing their company’s story with The Toy Association. Anecdotal feedback from real people at real companies helps strengthen advocacy efforts on behalf of the entire industry.
