The UK will be hosting the annual event for the first time in history.
The annual event attracts the best Othello players from around the world, and will take place from Wednesday 28th October to Saturday 31st October.
Taking place at the University Centre in Cambridge, finalists from 20 countries have secured their places by being the top players in their country’s national Othello championship, which took place earlier in the year.
Guy Plowman, world Othello championship tournament director, said: “The world championships is the calendar event of the year. This year, over 60 of the best players from around the world will be heading to Cambridge, which is a city that holds such a strong Othello heritage. The tournament is a chance to see the best players from around the world lock horns over a board. There are always shocks and surprises but the best people tend to rise to the top and there is always a real buzz for the final.”
The first world Othello championship was held in Tokyo in 1977, and since then the tournament has been held annually. This year will mark the 29th World Championship and will be taking place in the UK for the first time.
Marketing manager at John Adams, Lynette Norris, said: “This is the first time we have sponsored the world Othello championship and we’re very excited for such a prestigious tournament to be held in the UK, particularly in such a beautiful city as Cambridge which is so rich in history. Othello is such an iconic strategic board game which has been played and loved by generations, so we’re really looking forward to seeing who is crowned the world champion.”
