Smyths Toys to open new Irish distribution centre

Published on: 16th October 2023

Smyths’ new distribution centre will be one of the largest logistics units to have been developed in Ireland over recent years.

The Irish Times reports that, following the purchase of Dundalk North Business Park for €8.9m to secure ownership of a 27-acre holding, a planning application was submitted for the development on the site of a distribution centre comprising a single warehouse of 37,289sq m (401,375sq ft) along with parking for 50 HGVs.

The source believes that the property is being developed for Irish-headquartered Smyths Toys Superstores, which today operates a total of 231 outlets across Ireland, the UK and Europe. In 2018, Smyths acquired Toys R Us stores in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, re-branding the stores to Smyths and marking the start of the company’s expansion into mainland Europe. In 2022, this was furthered by the acquisition of French toy chain PicWicToys and stores opening in The Netherlands.

Smyths Toys’ new Dundalk distribution centre and warehouse will be one of the largest logistics units to have been developed in Ireland over recent years.

As the retailer readies for the festive season, a 300-page Smyths Toys Superstores Christmas Catalogue was published last month. Shoppers were invited to a special launch party in stores to celebrate its arrival. Last week, Smyths also unveiled its top toys for Christmas to help shoppers make the most of their Christmas shopping budget this year.
