Sales of plant based Biobuddi blocks exceed expectations

Published on: 8th June 2018

Biobuddi, based in Holland, produces toy blocks made from the sugar cane plant in an effort to combat plastic waste.

When the European Commission decided to take the next step its war on plastic strategy, the legislation introduced encouraged the increased use of sustainable plastic alternatives. In response, new Dutch toy company Biobuddi has started to produce toy blocks for kids made from waste of the sugar cane plant.

Biobuddi is working in collaboration with several partners in the field of biobased materials. The University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, a frontrunner in the research of biobased materials and products, is involved in the production process, having teamed up the company to increase the block quality with purely biobased materials.

As well as being compatible with modern commercial recycling systems, the production process of Biobuddi blocks saves up to 8x the CO2 emissions of regular manufacturing methods.

Steven van Bommel, CEO of Biobuddi, commented: “Biobuddi gives parents the peace of mind that the toys they give to their children aren’t harmful to the environment. In toy retail, Biobuddi is one of the few companies that has actively dedicated itself to becoming the most sustainable and eco-friendly brand in the market place. Other, bigger brands in the toy industry are lagging behind and making very small steps, whereas Biobuddi is dedicated to only selling toys with a much smaller footprint on our planet.”

Founded in 2017, Biobuddi has sold 10m toy blocks to date, and has high hopes for the future now it is established in the toy marketplace. For 2019, the brand wants the number of blocks sold to pass the 100m mark.

In the UK, the Biobuddi range is distributed by Liberty House Toys. Contact customer.services@libertyhousetoys.co.uk
