Incredibles 2 achieves biggest ever opening for an animated film

Published on: 18th June 2018

Disney has estimated that the film earned $180m in its first weekend in North American theatres.

The Incredibles 2 has taken the title for the best animated opening of all time, the biggest PG-rated launch ever, and the eighth-highest film launch overall.

Disney estimated Sunday that the film earned $180m in its first weekend in North American theatres — far surpassing industry analysts’ highest expectations, which had the film pegged for a $120m to $140m debut.

The previous animation record-holder was another Pixar sequel, Finding Dory, which launched with $135m in 2016. It was Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast that held the record for a PG debut with $174.8m in 2017.

Cathleen Taff, head of distribution for Walt Disney Studios, commented: “You don’t get to this level of opening without appealing to everyone, whether you’re a fan of animation, superheroes or just out to have a good time and want to see a good movie. We had a film that had something for all ages.”

Incredibles 2 picks up where the action of 2004’s Incredibles left off for Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson), Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack. Brad Bird returned to write and direct the sequel, which has been very well received by both critics and audiences.

According to Disney, adults made up 31% of the audience, families accounted for 57% and teens were 11%.

Incredibles 2 is also the second-biggest ever June debut, behind only Jurassic World ($208.8), with the latest franchise installment, Fallen Kingdom, is about to launch in North America next weekend.
