The Range reveals plans to launch online marketplace

The discount retailer is inviting suppliers to register their interest in the new platform.

Discount retailer The Range has announced plans to expand further into the online space with the launch of a new marketplace for third-party sellers.

The retailer says that taking on partners and their products on an exclusive basis through the new marketplace will allow it to build a “superior marketplace that promotes professionalism, quality and positive customer experiences”. The platform will also increase the range of products available, across categories including toys, homewares, furniture and dining.

A website set up to facilitate the registration process promises to introduce suppliers to 15m customers per month across a ‘state-of-the-art multichannel sales platform’. There are no set-up or subscription fees; suppliers can sell their products with commission-based fees, or sell to The Range wholesale. The retailer will then set the price. Toys & Games will carry a 13% commission rate, while Arts & Crafts is set at 19%.

A spokesperson for The Range said: “With 30% of the products sold on The Range’s website this summer having been from their trusted third-party suppliers, The Range Marketplace seems to be a logical and business-enhancing next step in the development of the company.”

Founded in 1989 by Chris Dawson, The Range has become the fastest growing retailers in the UK, with 180 stores across the country stocking more than 65,000 products. The retailer has become so successful that Chris, who started out as a market trader, is now a billionaire; he and his wife, Sarah, ranked 67th on the Rich List this year.
