Airfix reintroduces Avro Lancaster B.III (Special) The Dambusters kit

Published on: 10th March 2023

The Airfix kit commemorates the 80th anniversary of Operation Chastise, famously known as the Dambusters Raid.

The reintroduction of Avro Lancaster B.III (Special) The Dambusters features two new schemes, recreating the mission flown by Wing Commander Guy Gibson and Squadron Leader John Leslie Munro.

Following a short but intense period of training, the volunteer group of crack airmen who made up the new RAF No.617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton on the night of 16th/17th May 1943 for the start of the most audacious bombing raid in history, known as the Dambusters Raid.

Their enigmatic and inspirational commanding officer, Guy Gibson, is reputed to have said: “This squadron will either make history, or it will be completely wiped out”, but nevertheless, every man was determined to play their part in this historic raid.

This kit includes 267 detailed parts, including the unique bouncing bomb on the underside of the aircraft, which was specifically designed for the mission.

Ranked at skill level 3, this 1;72 scale kit offers exceptional detail and is a challenge to assemble. The overall length measures 302mm and has a wingspan of 432mm, and it also includes two decal schemes, adding a brand-new scheme to the Airfix range – the one flown by Squadron Leader John Leslie (Les) Munro.

The re-introduction of the Avro Lancaster B.III (Special) The Dambusters kit comes hot on the heels of Airfix’s recent launch of the new 1:72 scale Hawker Tempest and de Havilland Mosquito kits.
