Saturday 9th March marked the 60th anniversary of Barbie, the most popular fashion doll ever produced. Since 1959, Barbie has been dedicated to inspiring the limitless potential in every girl and that message has never been more relevant than now. To celebrate her 60th birthday, the brand has unveiled a 60th anniversary doll, a 60th anniversary Career Doll collection and a special edition Proudly Pink doll. A series of events in the UK and around the world has also been announced.

“For 60 years, Barbie has spanned three generations of girls, inspired them with over 200 careers and sold more than a billion dolls in the process. Barbie has clearly stood the test of time and remains the ultimate empowerment brand for the next generation,” said Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager, Barbie. “On this milestone anniversary, we are using our global platforms to inspire girls and educate society on what we can do together to unlock their full potential. We can’t wait to see what is next for Barbie in the next 60 years to inspire the next generation of leaders.”

The Barbie 60th anniversary career doll collection celebrates six careers that have been in the Barbie line from the beginning, and that are still areas that are underrepresented by women. They include astronaut, pilot, athlete, journalist, politician and firefighter.

The Barbie 60th anniversary doll, created in honour of her diamond anniversary, wears a cascading ball gown twinkling with silvery sparkles to pay homage to the original Barbie doll and her iconic fashion heritage, while the Barbie Proudly Pink doll celebrates the timeless elegance of classic couture from the past and adds a contemporary twist.

Last week, Barbie announced 20 inspirational women across multiple countries and continents, including the UK’s Adwoa Aboah, as Sheroes; positive role models to inspire the next generation. As part of the brand’s mission to close the Dream Gap, Barbie launched the Barbie Dream Gap Project Fund – enabling the brand to dedicate resources to likeminded organizations all in support of levelling the playing field for girls.
