Funko teams up with Forbidden Planet for new store opening

Published on: 6th November 2019

Forbidden Planet Glasgow is set to open the UK’s largest Comic Book & Pop Culture Store on 9th November, sponsored by Funko.

After 31 years located on Glasgow’s Buchanan Street, Forbidden Planet has decided to relocate to Sauchiehall Street, and open a store seven times that of its current space.

The grand opening is taking place on 9th November from 9am, with a special press & industry evening being held in the new store on 7th November from 7pm till late. The opening of the new flagship store will be sponsored by Funko, and will involve giveaways and a competition, with a huge prize up for grabs. This opening will also be the first time that comic book enthusiasts will see the giant murals showcased in store by Glasgow’s favourite world-famous comic artist, Frank Quitely.

A giant Chewbacca will take prime position in the new store. The eight-foot-high Funko Pop Chewie Statue stands proudly in what is set to be Scotland’s biggest comic book and memorabilia outlet.

Kevin O’Donnell, Glasgow based group retail manager of Forbidden Planet, said: “Work is well and truly underway at the new store and it is a busy but ultimately exciting time for everyone involved in the project. We will now have three floors, a new gaming section, Manga and much more; it will be strange for everyone, as it is more than four times the size of our Buchanan Street store. We have also employed eight more staff for Sauchiehall Street.”

Kevin added: “To have Frank Quitely’s work taking pride of place is something we can’t wait to see. This alone will be worth a look, especially for anyone who enjoyed the exhibition, The Art of Comics, at Kelvingrove a couple of years ago as there may be a few familiar pieces on our walls.”
